Just 24 hours after the completion and announcement of Deadpool & Wolverine's post-production, the film received another thrilling update. In a recent Total Film interview, director Shawn Levy discussed integrating Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) from the Fox universe. He also shared insights on Wade Wilson's situation at the beginning of the 2024 MCU film, noting it is set six years after Deadpool 2:
"It takes place six years after the last film. Wade is struggling with selling cars, promoting Blind Al's blood-pressure meds to pay rent, and dealing with Vanessa's new relationship.
"If Wade had known the outcome of using Cable's (Josh Brolin) time-travel device to save Vanessa, he might have reconsidered. This setup hints at more comedic moments when Deadpool suits up again to explore the multiverse and team up with Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and other allies. The six-year gap since Deadpool 2's 2018 release simplifies maintaining the timeline, avoiding previous MCU timeline issues.
Hugh Jackman, who retired as Wolverine after Logan in 2017, surprised fans when Ryan Reynolds announced Jackman's return in Deadpool 3 via social media in September 2022. This unexpected news raised concerns about affecting Logan's legacy. However, the creators assured that Deadpool & Wolverine would respect Logan's storyline. Reynolds even praised Logan as possibly the best comic book movie, supported by its high Rotten Tomatoes scores.
It's uncertain if this will be Jackman's final Wolverine appearance or if he'll join future Avengers films, but fans should savor this potentially last performance.
Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters on July 26. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and ticket information.
