Fubara Upholds Tenure of Rivers State LG Chairs – NVRL

By Olakunle Olasanmi, Abuja

The National Vanguard for Rule of Law (NVRL) has commended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his dedication to democratic principles by ensuring that elected local government officials serve their full three-year terms.

The NVRL highlighted Fubara’s commitment to the rule of law at a time when some governors interfere with the democratic process by prematurely ending the terms of duly elected officials. In a statement signed by Comrade Johnson Babatunde, the group praised Fubara for respecting the will of the electorate.

“By allowing the elected LG officials to complete their tenure, Governor Fubara has shown profound respect for the mandate given by the people,” Babatunde said. “This act is a testament to his democratic values, emphasizing the governor’s priority on the welfare and interests of his constituents over political or personal gains.

”The group lauded Fubara as a beacon of democracy and an exemplary figure in Nigerian politics, encouraging other leaders to follow his example.

“The National Vanguard for Rule of Law applauds Governor Fubara for permitting the 23 elected local government chairmen and councilors to serve their full three-year terms,” the statement read. “This is in stark contrast to the actions of Benue State’s Governor Hyacinth Alia, who dismantled elected local government structures despite a court order, and former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, who dissolved the councils he inherited.

”Despite the political tension and allegiance of the local government officials to the Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, Governor Fubara maintained his democratic stance, allowing them to complete their tenure, which ended on June 17th, 2024.

“We urge other governors to emulate Governor Fubara’s respect for democracy and the rule of law. The immediate past local government chairmen should also recognize Governor Fubara’s magnanimity and commitment to democratic principles,” the statement concluded.
