Investigative journalist Adejuwon Soyinka, who serves as the Regional Editor for The Conversation Africa, was detained by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Sunday.
According to a distress message shared by one of his associates, Soyinka was apprehended shortly after returning from the United Kingdom. The friend reported that the reason for his arrest was not disclosed, and Soyinka has since been held incommunicado.
The distress message noted: “Adejuwon Soyinka was taken into custody by DSS officers around 5:40 am on Sunday, August 25, 2024, after arriving in Nigeria on a Virgin Atlantic flight from the UK. No explanation for his detention has been provided, and attempts to reach him have been unsuccessful as his phone remains unreachable.”
When contacted, DSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya stated that he was unaware of Soyinka's detention and did not have any comments on the matter at that time.
