Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel representing Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has criticized President Bola Tinubu for perpetuating what he describes as an ongoing disrespect towards the Igbo people, a sentiment he believes started under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Ejimakor expressed his dismay over Kanu’s continued detention, calling it a significant affront to the Igbo community. He took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his concerns, stating, "The legacy of insult to Ndigbo that started under Buhari seems to be continuing under Tinubu. The continued incarceration of MAZI NNAMDI KANU is the highest insult to Ndigbo."
Kanu was apprehended in Kenya in June 2021 and was controversially extradited back to Nigeria during Buhari's administration. Despite ongoing legal battles and numerous calls from various stakeholders for a political resolution, Kanu remains in detention.
Ejimakor's statement highlights the growing frustration within the Igbo community regarding the Nigerian government's handling of Kanu's case, with many viewing it as a symbol of broader systemic issues faced by the region.
