The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has confirmed that its president, Joe Ajaero, has been summoned by the police for questioning in relation to an ongoing terrorism-related investigation. The NLC disclosed this development in a statement issued by Benson Upah, the Congress' Head of Information and Public Affairs, late on Monday.
According to the statement, the police's letter of invitation to Ajaero outlines charges related to criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, subversion, and cybercrime. The letter, dated August 19, 2024, and signed by ACP Adamu Mu’azu on behalf of the Commissioner of Police Intelligence, directs Ajaero to report to the IRT Complex at Guzape Junction on August 20th, with a warning that a warrant for his arrest could be issued if he fails to comply.
The NLC expressed concerns over how the invitation was handled, noting that when police officers attempted to deliver the letter, they reported that the Labour House was locked, despite staff being present beyond normal working hours. The Congress also took issue with the fact that Ajaero was not addressed by his official title of NLC President, raising further suspicions about the intent behind the police's actions.
This incident follows recent tensions between the NLC and the authorities, including a raid on the NLC headquarters, which the Congress condemned. The NLC has previously urged the government to engage in dialogue with protest organizers and criticized the police for their actions during the protests.
As the situation develops, the NLC has called for accountability, warning that the police will be held responsible if anything happens to its leadership or members. The unfolding events have sparked speculation about whether there are efforts to undermine Ajaero's leadership.
