The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has announced its intention to revoke the licenses of fuel marketers involved in the unauthorized sale of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in jerry cans. This decision follows a closed-door meeting with major retail outlet managers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Friday.
During the meeting, Ogbugo Ukoha, NMDPRA’s Executive Director of Distribution Systems, Storage, and Retailing Infrastructure, stressed that the authority will enforce strict compliance with regulations. He warned that marketers caught engaging in this illegal practice will face increased surveillance and potential license suspension.
The NMDPRA emphasized that this action is necessary to prevent the dangers associated with the improper handling of PMS, a highly flammable product. Additionally, the authority is determined to combat the smuggling of petrol across borders, often facilitated by the use of jerry cans.
A recent surveillance operation led by NMDPRA, in partnership with security agencies, uncovered illegal fuel depots in the FCT. The operators were apprehended and handed over to the Department of State Security (DSS) for prosecution.
