Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), has strongly criticized Nigerian politicians for exploiting the nation's insecurity as a political tool to discredit President Bola Tinubu’s administration and various state governors.
Speaking at the Nigerian Bar Association's 2024 Annual General Conference in Lagos, Okonjo-Iweala, who previously served as Nigeria's Finance Minister, expressed concern over how insecurity is being manipulated for political gains. She stated, “Security in our country has been weaponized by political actors, who use it to make their opponents appear ineffective, regardless of the devastating impact on the lives and property of innocent Nigerians.”
Okonjo-Iweala urged for an end to such practices, highlighting that Nigeria’s progress is being stifled by the persistent insecurity, which is exacerbated by the theft of national resources. She called for the adoption of advanced technology to curb the theft of national assets and emphasized the importance of security for socio-economic development.
She also stressed that Nigerians must collectively agree that the theft of any national assets is unacceptable, pointing out that modern technology can effectively track such crimes and that there should be no further excuses for inaction.
Her comments come at a time when Nigeria continues to struggle with significant security challenges, with the country facing not only the direct impact of these issues but also the political maneuvering that complicates efforts to resolve them..see more
