A heartbreaking incident occurred in the Oshin area along Asa Dam road on Saturday, August 17, 2024, leading to the deaths of a mother and her three children after they allegedly consumed contaminated rice. The victims, who have been buried following Islamic rites, are believed to have died from food poisoning. The deceased children were identified as Abibat, 9, Zainab, 7, and Abdulfatai, 5.
Reports suggest that the family had eaten rice for breakfast before the parents left for the day. Later that evening, when the mother returned to prepare dinner, she noticed that their eldest daughter was unusually cold and clenching her teeth. The child was immediately taken to Oreofe Hospital and later referred to Ilorin General Hospital and finally to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), where she was pronounced dead.

Tragically, while the family was at the hospital with their eldest daughter, the two younger children began exhibiting similar symptoms. They were rushed to the hospital but sadly passed away. The mother also started showing symptoms of poisoning on Sunday and was taken to UITH, where she, too, died along with her children in the early hours of Monday. The father, who also consumed the rice, is currently hospitalized and undergoing tests.
The head of the family, Alhaji Jagunmolu Adinni, expressed deep sorrow but accepted the event as a test from Allah. He also noted that many sympathizers continue to visit the family to offer their condolences. The only surviving child is their son, Muhammad Basheer.
