Woman Trapped as Sinkhole Swallows Pavement in Kuala Lumpur

Authorities in Malaysia are working to rescue a 48-year-old woman who fell into an eight-meter-deep sinkhole that suddenly appeared on a busy street in Kuala Lumpur. The incident occurred as the woman, an Indian national, was sitting on a roadside bench along Jalan India Masjid when the ground beneath her unexpectedly gave way.

Eyewitnesses captured videos showing rescue workers at the scene, attempting to reach the woman. The rescue teams, equipped with ladders, hammers, and digging tools, were seen trying to clear the debris, but there has been no sign of the woman so far.

The Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 08:22 local time (00:22 GMT) and promptly dispatched a team of 15 firefighters to the scene. According to Operation Commander Mohd Riduan Akhbar, a search and rescue operation is actively ongoing. Specialized teams, including the Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team of Malaysia (STORM) and the K9 unit, have been deployed to assist in the rescue efforts.

Additionally, 90 personnel from various agencies are participating in the operation, as confirmed by Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman, the local police chief. The authorities are also reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses to gather more information about the incident.

Sinkholes often form when underground water erodes the rock beneath the surface, leading to a sudden collapse. While sinkholes are relatively common, injuries from such incidents are rare. However, they can sometimes result in severe consequences, as evidenced by past sinkhole disasters around the world.

Efforts to locate and rescue the woman are ongoing, with authorities determined to reach her as soon as possible.
