Benue State has confirmed four cases of Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox), with 20 additional suspected cases under observation, according to the State Epidemiologist, Dr. Asema Msuega.
Dr. Msuega revealed that out of the four confirmed cases, three patients have been successfully treated and discharged. However, the fourth case, which was confirmed last Friday, remains in isolation and is responding positively to treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital.
Regarding the 20 suspected cases, Dr. Msuega explained that not all patients require hospitalization. Some individuals have been advised to self-isolate at home, similar to protocols used during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Msuega noted that the confirmed cases are primarily from Makurdi and Gwer West Local Government Areas, while the suspected cases span across five local government areas, including Ushongo, Kastina-Ala, Gboko, Makurdi, and Gwer West.
He added that the state is awaiting laboratory results for a recent suspected case from Gwer East.
To combat the spread of Mpox, the state has initiated a robust public awareness campaign, urging citizens to practice good hygiene, avoid unnecessary contact with potentially infected individuals, and promptly report any suspected cases to the nearest health facility.
