The Department of State Services (DSS) has provided clarification regarding the recent visit by its operatives to the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) office in Abuja. Contrary to widespread reports, the DSS insists that its officers were conducting a lawful, routine investigation and not engaging in any form of harassment or intimidation.
In a statement issued on its official platform, the DSS explained that the visit was part of its standard procedure, involving two unarmed officers. The agency emphasized that their actions were wrongly interpreted as an invasion or raid, which was never the case.
The statement reads, “The DSS has been flooded with numerous queries about an alleged unlawful raid on SERAP offices in Abuja and Lagos. These reports are misleading. The visit was a lawful, routine investigation that has been misinterpreted as harassment."
The DSS urged the public to disregard false narratives and reiterated its commitment to professionalism. They also called on citizens to support national security efforts.
SERAP had previously condemned the visit, calling it an intimidation tactic and urging President Bola Tinubu to instruct the DSS to cease such actions. The human rights organization highlighted the growing concerns over government crackdowns on NGOs and activists in Nigeria. see more
