Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), arrived in Benin, Edo State on Monday to oversee preparations for the forthcoming governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024.
During his visit, Prof. Yakubu is set to conduct a series of activities including observing mock accreditation processes at three locations, evaluating INEC’s local government offices, and participating in meetings with security agencies and stakeholders. He will also engage with staff members, visit the local palace, and oversee the signing of a peace accord by political parties.
Edo State INEC’s Head of Voters Education and Publicity, Timidi Wariowei, outlined the schedule for the visit. On Tuesday, Prof. Yakubu will assess readiness in Ikpoba Okha, Egor, Oredo, and Ovia North East LGAs, and witness the mock accreditation at Western Boys High School and Idia College.
On Wednesday, he will continue stakeholder engagements and visit the palace. The peace accord signing will occur on Thursday, alongside further meetings with INEC staff. Wariowei emphasized that the security and INEC meeting will focus on election-related security concerns and invited journalists to cover the scheduled events.
