The management of Christ-Mitots International School, located in Isawo, Ikorodu, Lagos State, has indefinitely suspended a teacher, Stella Nwadigo, following accusations of mistreating and physically abusing a three-year-old pupil, Abayomi Michael.
The incident came to public attention through a video shared on social media
platform X (formerly Twitter) by a user identified as #dammiedammie35. The
video reportedly captured Nwadigo slapping the young boy, sparking widespread
outrage.
In response to the public outcry, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual
Violence Agency confirmed on Wednesday that the teacher had been arrested by
the Owutu Family Support Unit (FSU). The agency stated:
“We appreciate everyone who brought this disturbing incident to our attention.
We are pleased to inform the public that the teacher in question has been
arrested, and an investigation is now underway.”
By Thursday, the school management issued a statement addressing the
incident, describing it as “deeply troubling” and contrary to the institution’s
core values. The statement also announced the teacher's suspension and outlined
steps being taken to address the matter.
The school’s statement read:
“We are aware of a deeply troubling incident involving one of our teachers and
a student, which has been circulating on social media. The video shows a
teacher engaging in physical discipline in a manner that is completely
unacceptable and contrary to the values and principles of our school.
“As an institution committed to fostering a culture of respect, care, and
dignity, we are horrified by this incident. The teacher involved has been
suspended indefinitely as we conduct a thorough investigation. This decisive
action underscores our zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct and our
obligation to protect every child under our care.
“We extend our sincerest apologies to the student and their family. We have
reached out to express our regret, offer support, and ensure their needs are
fully addressed.”
The school further pledged to prevent such incidents from occurring in the
future by introducing mandatory training sessions for teachers, focusing on
child protection, positive disciplinary practices, and sensitivity in handling
students. A confidential whistle-blowing system has also been implemented to
encourage the prompt reporting of inappropriate behavior.
The management concluded by asking for public understanding and patience as
they take comprehensive steps to address the issue and reinforce their
commitment to the safety and well-being of all students.
