Renowned Igbo poet and English professor, Dubem Okafor, has died in a tragic incident in the United States. The 64-year-old scholar reportedly shot his 37-year-old wife, Cheryl, before ending his own life last Sunday.
According to reports, Okafor, a cousin of the late poet Christopher Okigbo, was devastated after his wife left him just days earlier. Seeking to meet with her, he arranged a visit to his sister’s home in Reading, Pennsylvania. During the encounter, he shot Cheryl multiple times before turning the gun on himself at around 3:45 p.m., police confirmed.
Authorities discovered a small-caliber handgun at the scene. The Berks County coroner ruled Cheryl's death a homicide and Okafor’s a suicide.
Okafor, an associate professor of English at Kutztown University, and his wife, a visual artist, arrived separately at the residence of his sister, Patricia Ofilin, on Pear Street before the tragic event unfolded, investigators stated.
