ASUU Praises UNIZIK Lecturer for Professionalism After Assault by Student Over TikTok Recording

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) chapter, has applauded Dr. Chukwudi Okoye for maintaining his composure after being physically assaulted by a female student.

Dr. Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, was reportedly attacked and bitten by the student while she was filming a TikTok video in a school hallway. According to reports, the student accused him of disrupting her recording, leading to the altercation.

In a statement dated February 14, ASUU UNIZIK, through its chairman, Kingsley Ubaoji, and secretary, Joseph Onyejiaka, commended Dr. Okoye for his maturity in handling the situation. The statement, which was shared on social media, praised his professionalism and self-restraint despite the provocation.

The statement read:

"ASUU acknowledges and appreciates Dr. Chukwudi Michael Okoye from the Department of Theatre and Film Studies for his remarkable display of patience and professionalism in the face of an unwarranted attack by a student, Goddy-Mbakwe Chiamaka Precious, from the Department of History and International Studies. His ability to remain calm despite the aggression is commendable and reflects his high level of discipline and integrity. His response has not only earned him respect but also upheld the values of our union and the university community."

The union also expressed appreciation for the swift action taken by the Acting Vice-Chancellor in addressing the matter, ensuring justice and reinforcing a secure academic environment.

"The Vice-Chancellor's prompt intervention has reassured staff members of their safety and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to a conducive learning environment. ASUU remains dedicated to defending the rights and welfare of our members while advocating for academic integrity and discipline within the institution."

Following the incident, the university management issued an official letter announcing the student's immediate expulsion and directing her to vacate the campus.
